Funding the cost of care and support

Funding the cost of care and support

The cost of social care and how we pay for it is an issue that isn't going away. We are all living longer and we need to think about our future and how we want to be cared for.

How much will I have to pay?

If you have been assessed as eligible for care and support, the amount you pay will be based on a financial assessment. Further details can be found on the financial assessment page

You will be responsible for paying the full cost of your care in the following circumstances:
  • If you need long term residential/nursing care and you have assets (including your property) worth over £23,250.
  • If you live at home, require care support and have over £25,000.
  • If your care needs are assessed as not qualifying under the eligibility criteria.

I am able to receive some financial support, what happens next?

If the local authority will financially help to meet some of your needs for care and support, you will then be given a personal budget. For further information, see the personal budgets page.

A part of finalising your personal budget amount will involve working with you to develop a care and support plan, which will set out how your needs can be best met. Further details can be found on the care and support plan page.

What should I do if I am responsible for paying for all or some of my care costs?

In all circumstances where you need to financially contribute to your care and support needs, we recommend that you seek independent financial advice.

If you do not qualify for financial help from the council and have to pay the full cost of care you will be known as a self-funder.

Changes to the total amount you will pay for care, called the cap on care costs, have been delayed by Government from 2016 until April 2020.  Read more about the cap on care costs.

What happens after I find out about my financial eligibility?

No matter what the outcome is, we will work with you to develop a care and support plan that which will set out how your needs can be best met. Further details can be found on the care and support plan page.

What happens if I'm not happy with the decision or my circumstances change?

Details of what to do and who to contact can be found in the financial assessment page.
