Support for someone with sensory loss
Early intervention and support can make a significant difference to the impact a sensory loss has on a person's life.
If you are experiencing sensory loss we strongly recommend you see your GP as soon as possible and contact the Sensory Service to discuss your needs.
Sensory loss can be defined as one of the following:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing: Where a person has difficulties with their hearing at a severe or profound level, or where a person identifies themselves as Deaf and uses sign language as their preferred method of communication.
Sight Loss: Where a person has sight loss, which cannot be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses.
Deafblind: A person is deafblind if they have a combined sight and hearing impairment that causes difficulties with communication, access to information and mobility.
The Sensory Service offers a range of sensory loss support to Stoke-on-Trent residents and their carers including:
If you are a Deaf sign language user we have specialist staff who can communicate with you in sign language.
**Equipment provided by the Sensory Service is loaned free of charge and must be returned if no longer required or you move out of the Stoke Area.**

- An assessment of a person's needs caused by a sensory loss.
- Information about techniques and *equipment appropriate to cope with sensory loss.
- Visual impairment rehabilitation programmes.
- Mobility training to give a person with a sensory loss the confidence and skills to go out independently.
- Help with kitchen skills, preparing food, chopping veg etc, so you can be independent in the kitchen.
- Signposting for support to access benefits, welfare rights, debt and housing advice.
- Information about organisations, support groups, services and concessions.
- Information about services to support a person with a sensory loss in the workplace.

Registration as partially sighted (sight impaired), or blind (severley sight impaired)
If you have sight loss, your GP or high street optician may refer you to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) who can assess if you meet the criteria for certification as sight impaired or severely sight impaired.
Certification can entitle you to a range of benefits and services. To find out more visit the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB website
Once a person is Certificated of Visual Impairment a copy will be sent to the Sensory Team, who will then contact you with regards to being registered and can discuss any support you may need.
You don't need to be registered to receive advice and support from the Sensory Service and can choose not to be registered if you prefer. However, we actively encourage people to contact us at the earliest opportunity to discuss their sensory loss.
