Safety in the Home
Every year in the UK more than 6,000 people die in accidents in the home and 2.7 million turn up at accident and emergency departments seeking treatment
Did you know?
More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. You can find more information about about home safety in general by visiting the
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents website (ROSPA)
The Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also offer loads of advice on
home safety
Older people, in particular the frail elderly, are also one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. These accidents are often due to falls resulting in arm, leg and shoulder injuries.
Falls Prevention and Treatment
Anyone can fall at any time. A fall may follow a simple slip or trip, or it may be as a result of a medical condition. There is NHS
advice and guidance about what to do if you or someone you know does have a fall.
Preventing a fall
Although we may not be able to prevent all falls and accidents, there is a lot we can do to prevent the number and severity of slips, trips and falls.
- NHS Choices provides a list of some simple changes that can be made to your lifestyle and home / work environments. There is also more information on the healthy lifestyles page
- If you find you are in need of some simple aids and home adaptations, then the equipment catalogue has a wide range that you can choose from, compare prices on and purchase online. For further information, check out the equipment for easier living section
- There is also a useful NHS approved website called Falls Assistant, which enables you self assess the key falls risks and offer appropriate support and self management advice.
